Commiting to Consistency - Lets make it stick!

Today I had the day off to take care of my son who was sick. I took it as an opportunity to get a soft start on some of my goals. I looked into a couple of options for my fitness goals. First I thought I would do the empowered abs program. I laid out mat and got started doing the exercises. One set in baby started crying. After tending to him I tried the next two abs body weight exercises. One of them was very uncomfortable and I realized this program wasn't going to work for me. I am just not a fan of bodyweight exercises like that.

I didn't let that stop me from doing my exercises for the day. I decided to take a walk. The rain had stopped (it was a thunderstorm). In the past I had walked a mile around the neighborhood with the stroller, which is 3 laps. This time I decided to challenge myself and walk with baby in the Moby wrap (baby carrier). I thought it would be comforting to him and would also give me some more strength training. He weighs almost 19 lbs now. I needed to get 30min of exercise in for the healthy lifestyle tracking (more on that later). So I did 4 laps (1.5 miles) instead of my usual 3 (1 mile) to get 30min. And the average speed was was actually .3mph more than usual even with the extra weight. I could definitely feel like it was more of a workout with carrying the baby. But it wasn't too much just a little more strength needed, rather than a leisure stroll.

My walk workout summary

So at work we have a healthy lifestyle incentive program. If you workout 90 mins a week basically 30 min three times a week, you get $5 off your insurance each pay period. This is my accountability.

July 6 first entry 30 min

So instead of doing the bodyweight exercises (abs program), I looked on YouTube for some rowing exercise plans to loose weight. I know I like this form of exercise and I feel it is the best option for me to do something I enjoy and is effective. It is a full body workout. And if I am at the gym and have some extra time I can do some arm strength workouts as well.

I took a screenshot of the YouTube example rowing workout
So this program seems like I could follow it. I don't have to watch a YouTube exercise each time, I just follow the simple plan and do it. The program alternates from a HIIT (high intensity interval training) one day and a steady row the next day. With four days of active rowing and 2 days of leisure exercise such as walking or hiking. And one rest day. I think I would like to go to the gym M-T-W-TH, 4 days in a row, so I have Friday to get ready for sabbath. If I have a week where I have counseling on a Tuesday I might switch my gym day to Friday (sunset) time allowing.

Last quarter I had the intention of doing the healthy incentive program, but didn't follow through. I did go to the gym several times but not consistently. And I forgot to track it on the sheet. Also on days I missed, I kind of felt oh well I missed it this week so I guess that's it... And kind of gave up.
I need to think of the reasons why I wasn't able to have consistency last quarter.

There are barriers to my consistency that I need to accommodate for:

Challenges I have with making it to the gym are:
  • Packing my gym bag the night before
  • Arriving and leaving work at the correct time
So part of packing my gym bag the night before is going to be a part of my nightly routine that I am trying to develop as part of the flylady system (more on that in another post). These routines are developed to help get in the habit of doing things on the regular so you don't get bogged down when it piles up.

Some of the things I am utilizing for tracking my habits is an app called "Habit now". I am still playing with it to see how I can best utilize it. Currently I have habit tracking for night meds at 9pm and bed time at 10pm. I'll have to see if I can add some of the flylady routines in there. But so far it had been helpful with reminders and tracking if I did it. I just added tracking for clocking in at 8am. Waking up on time has always been a problem for me. I have the tendency to press snooze and lay back down. THIS IS A CRONIC PROBLEM for me. Developing those habits of taking my meds a 9pm or earlier and start winding down so I can fall asleep at 10pm is so important to starting the next day right. Lately I have been needing sleep aids to help me fall asleep and I don't take it right off the bat so it will be 11pm and I'm still not asleep when I finally decide for that extra boost with the additional pill. It is all a part of my bipolar illness.

Well that was a lot to post about, but I know it is helpful writing it and tracking it. It is a form of accountability and also helps me get in the right frame of mind. If I discuss my goals iny blog it helps me process and see how I am doing.

Until next time, Keep being determined 2b determined to find excitement in the mundane!

Day 6 - $1 30 Day Challenge

Day 6 started out great. I woke up at 7 no snooze needed. I was up. Usually I press snooze for an hour, so this is amazing. I had time to watch good mythical morning and eat breakfast leisurely.
I made breakfast the night before. Scrambled eggs bell pepper, onion and ground turkey, topped with cheese and hot sauce.
I was out the door by 8am. It has been so long since I have been to work at 8:30 my ideal arrival time. And I was on track. But I realized when I got to the red light before the interstate, I forgot my lunch. Thankfully I wasn't too far away, so I turned around to get it. I only arrived a few minutes after 8:30.

Yesterday I talked to my psychiatrist. She is holistic, which basically means she considers the mind, body, and spirit, and looks at other factors rather than just mental health but also physical health. She has been trying to get me to start a gluten free diet and exercise for months, so she was happy I was on this plan.
Overall my mental health has been pretty stable lately, my only complaint has been my waking up late and migraine and vomiting side effects. But I have really noticed my waking up has been better since starting this diet. And my energy has been good too, which I will talk about more.

It was a very busy day at work. BTW I am a Activites Manager at a nursing home. We were getting ready for family visit parade drive by. A way for families to see their residents safely from a distance, since we are isolatting during covid.
After the morning meeting, my yard signs were ready for pick up from fedex, perfect timing. When I got back we put out the signs and pinwheels. After making a couple of signs for residents to hold, it was time for lunch. It was left over sausage and veggies. I ate quickly. It is so much easier to bring my lunch than drive to go. No more late lunch breaks (I only get 30min).

Now it was time for the parade. 2nd floor was up first. It was a big crowd. Everyone worked as a team to get the residents outside and navigate the cars. My boss said I did an excellent job.  The 3rd floor was next, which was a smaller group. But it was really moving to see a trach patient on oxygen out to visit his family. Last was the 4th floor, the largest crowd. The cars were lined up in the parking lot and down the street. There was one point where they were stuck. But we got it moving and Miranda and Janice did a great job of directing traffic. It was so fun. Some people decorated their cars, and brought dogs.
I could have never done this event without the support of the other staff members. It was a big undertaking. It took a lot of planning, and a lot of just making it work at show time. Every step was truly a team effort to get it together. It was a special moment for a lot of family members who hadn't seen their family in months.

I was standing on my feet all day, just going, going, going. So I was ready to go home and rest. I did rest some, but I knew I needed to cook dinner and exercise before sundown. I was so sticky and dirty from being outside all day.

Dinner was Mexican pasta casserole. I got dinner together which required boiling water for pasta and saute peppers. Then add the turkey meat which I had already cooked, and simmer in taco seasoning. Then into the oven to bake with the sauce and cheese.

While it baked I did my exercises which was a parymid of x dots, burpes, quick feet and mountain climbers. I did 10-8-6-2. It wasn't terrible; I have improved. I did use modifications. Some exercises were easier than others. Then I took my much needed shower.

I ate dinner when I got out of the shower. I served it with salsa and Greek yogurt (instead of sour cream). The Greek yogurt was great, tastes just like sour cream.
The pasta was made out of chickpeas. It wasn't terrible, but not great.  The noodles had a rough texture similar to wheat, but not like other gluten free pasta that is gummy. The meal over all was pretty good. It was very filling.

It was a very big accomplishment to get everything I did done. After a long day at work, I still managed to cook and exercise. Amazing.

*Note I bought the wrong week meal plan so it may be different than the challenge. I think this meal plan is from the welcome package

Day 1 - $1 30 day challenge

Today I started day 1 of the 3 day detox in the 30 day challenge. I started the day of good. I woke up pretty early and drank the detox drink which has apple cider vinegar, lemon, green tea, and a little salt. It was bitter, but I got it down. I drank it cold. After that I got my smoothie ready. I am using a blender that the previous tenant left in the apartment. I was worried it wouldn't fare well with the greens and frozen veggies, but with a little stir it got it done pretty good. I also have an inexpensive small blender but I didn't think it would fit the 2cups of kale. Here is a picture of the smoothie:

After breakfast I got dressed and took my before pictures. I wore a tight shirt and tight pants. Wow I have a lot of improvement.

After awhile I did my baseline exercises. Which was push ups, squats, quick feet, and mountain climbers. Do each for 1 min and count how many you did. I was pretty winded after. It was harder than you would think.

Lunch was a salad with spinach, broccoli, green bell pepper, and zucchini. With a homemade dressing. It was an avacado, cliantro, lime dressing. I know I bought a lime, but I couldn't find it anywhere. I even looked it my car. So that was really frustrating. I ended up borrowing one from my neighbor. It was probably the healthiest, most green meal I have ever eaten. It was a really large portion too. See below.

I am prone to vommiting lately, so I went to take a nausea medicine. My doctor also recommend I take a probiotic. So I wanted to get back to taking them. I made the mistake of taking the probiotic before the nausea medicine kicked in. And it triggered me to throw up 🤮😩. I didn't give up though. After I felt better and ate some more and I was okay. There was still some left but I was pretty hungry after doing some errands, so I finished it later.

The family was cutting down some trees in the backyard so I helped out. I got hungry again, probably because of the vommiting. So I ate some plain Greek yogurt with 1/2 tsp of honey, pinch of celyon cinnamon and a dash of vanilla extract. Plain greek yogurt with 1/2 tsp of raw honey is on the approved snack list. It was very good. Nice and creamy.

Before dinner on an empty stomach I drank the detox drink. I tried it warm this time. I drank it really slow. I'm not sure if I like it better hot or cold.

Dinner was raw spiralized zucchini and carrot with sliced red pepper and chia seeds. With a homemade dressing that had avacado, ginger, and cayenne pepper and lemon.  The dressing was very tasty.  The spiralizer didn't work with the carrot which was frustrating. Next time I'll use a grater. Over all dinner was good. See below.

I finished up the day by preparing the salad lunch for tommorow for work. Breakfast is a smoothie, so I'll just have to throw that together quick because I usually don't have much time. I can't really prep it.

I am happy with how day 1 went. Excited for day 2, I hear the dinner is really good on day 2.

30 day Challenge Start

Tomorrow I start the beginning of the $1 30 day challenge, beginning with the 3 day detox. If you are interested in joining click this link $1 30 day challenge.

The 30 day challenge is a meal plan and exercise plan for 30 days and if you want to continue you can sign up for a monthly subscription.

I stood on the scale and was shocked,  I stepped on a second time to recheck in disbelief. I took my measurements. And tomorrow I will do the baseline exercises. There is a lot of room for progress, and I really want to make a change.

I am at my heaviest weight. I have been this weight before. It is horrible, because I carry all my weight in my belly, so many people ask me if I am pregnant.

I had my last meal before the diet, and I feel bloted, so I feel ready to start the detox, so I can feel better.

Things I will have to overcome:
  • Drinking soda and sugary drinks
  • Eating candy and sweets
  • Preparing food - I usually order something to go for lunch at work and have very little time in the mornings
  • Motivation to exercise
Some health challenges I face that affects my weight: Thyroid, PCOS, Bipolar and the side effects of meds.

I bought the groceries for the detox Friday.
Tomorrow (Sunday) starts the detox, I have the detox drink made in the fridge. I am glad the first day isn't a work day, so I can get acclimated. The morning starts with a smoothie, lunch is a salad with homemade dressing, and dinner is a raw zoodle bowl. I even bought a spiralizer to make it.

There is a fb group for support which has been helpful.

This blog has always been about being determined2bdetermined (my user name), which is to say you have to try to try I suppose. Its about motivating yourself. It's about finding the excitement in the mundane, because things like diet and exercise are hard but it helps to get excited about what is hard.

Read my first blog post here for more about the theme of this blog.  Kindling the fire of existence  Here is a quote:
Motivation is hard to come by. It is my motto of the season to find excitement in the mundane. This is the only way I believe I can conjure up some motivation to do all the things I need to do for a better life but don't want to do. It is about convincing myself that I want this. I am not determined, but I want to be. I want to be determined, I want to be consistent. I need to be
I will try to post regularly with my progress.

*I did check with my doctor before starting, which is recommend.

Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy Schedule

Last week I exercised Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. I am really proud of myself for doing that and for making it to work at 8am each day. I have a new schedule so I will have to find a new way to fit working out in my schedule. Being able to stick to this schedule this past week has shown me how I can get out of depression by changing my sleep/wake cycle. I learned what the type of therapy that focuses on it interpersonal and social rhythm therapy for bipolar disorder. The vital rational for interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT) is, "unstable or disrupted daily routines lead to circadian instability and affective episodes in vulnerable individuals." To keep moods stable clients keep a log of daily and nightly activities, levels, of social stimulation, sleep and mood. The focus of therapy goals are to "(a) identify a key interpersonal problem area; (b) set targets for regulation meals, exercise, and sleep; (c) make plans for keeping rhythm stable when disruptive social events occur; and (d) develop strategies to manage the priority interpersonal problem area.." For more information see their website: https://www.ipsrt.org

This blog is kind of my IPSRT. I talk and that is what I am going to focus for this post. I am going to plan my schedule. Then I can get back at the end of the week and see how it went.

Sunday: wake 8:30 am ,exercise at or after 6:30pm sleep 12am
Monday: wake 8:30am (because I need to wake up the same time everyday), exercise at or before Noon, sleep 12am
Tuesday: wake up 8:30am, exercise at or before 9am - 10am latest sleep 12am
Wednesday: (same as Monday) wake 8:30am (because I need to wake up the same time everyday), exercise at or before Noon, sleep (due to early wake up) try for 9/10pm
Thursday:  Wake up 4:30am 5am latest (leave house at 5:30), exercise at 2:30p or later, Sleep by 12am
Friday: (same as Monday) wake 8:30am, exercise at or before Noon, sleep 12am latest
Saturday: Sabbath relax and rest try to wake up by 9am for consistency
Sunday: not working so schedule is open wake up by 9am

That is my plan!

Nightly Schedule

Thanksgiving week was not good for my health. I was at my parents house and they had some candy from Halloween. I could not stop from eating it all up.

Good news though, I got a job. I began training this week. I have to be there at 8 am so my schedule has been really tight. I had some coffee and I think it gave me motivation to go to the library and to the gym after class Monday. I came home and still managed to get to bed at a reasonable hour.

I think I can manage this new schedule, working out at night. Today is Tuesday. I made it to the library and to the gym again tonight. I did falter though; I ate two doughnuts. They weren't even that good. I regret it, because it wasn't worth it. I just have to get those thoughts out of my head. I start thinking about it and then I want it.

On Sunday I made a big batch of pasta and lentils so I would have dinner and lunch throughout the week. I passed up the lentils for a sandwich I bought at the grocery store. It was a Kings Hawaiian bun. Now that I am trying to avoid sugar it is to amazing how many things that are not sweets have sugar it. Even pasta sauce is sweet!

I feel good going into the finals week. I just need to keep this energy up and get work done.

Returning to Find the Excitement in the Mundane

I have gained weight. I have been depressed, sleeping and eating a lot.  It may be because of a new medication change, but still its bad. When I am in my lows I compulsively eat. That is what I am battling now,  staying in my bed all day and eating compulsively. I have realized it is an addiction.  I am addicted to sugar and carbs.  So what am I to do?

I am trying to create a schedule to keep me healthy, but  schedules are hard for me to follow, as this blog is a testament of.
I started this new schedule goal last Friday. I was going to wake up and  go to the gym before 8 am and abstain from eating sugar. I managed  to do it one day. I woke up and went to the gym that first morning (Friday). I was doing good at avoiding  sugar. I succeeded in 4 days without sugar, but then I cracked. I saw a picture of a  twinkie and I wanted one. I don't  even particularly like twenties. They are just okay in my opinion. I spent my last bit of money on twinkies &  cookies at 11 pm Tuesday and a candy bar at  4 pm today (Wednesday) and chocolate fruit bites at 6pm. That is even more evidence of the addiction. That is a long way  from where I was at the beginning  of the semester. The idea of being  addicted to food was very uncomfortable for me to face.

Thoughout the week I also realized that since I avoided sweets, I still compulsively ate carbs. What is really bad is that I will go to a lot of effort to have my addictive food. If I don't have any sweets on hand I will make some, the microwave cakes got me for awhile but recently I have gone to the lengths of making more strenuous foods such as shortbread cookies, yellow cake, and when I was avoiding sugar I made homemade focaccia. This was when all I had was a few ingredients in the house. I typically don't even like bread, I really just needed something to much on and the carrots weren't satisfying.
Soon I will learn how to avoid sweets and carbs and instead take satisfaction from having an apple or salad instead. Now I just have to focus on getting rid of the addiction.

I am realizing that I need to play to my strengths and weaknesses. I need to learn from my past and decide the best course of action. In the past I have used fitness pal to keep track of the every detailed account of what I ate. As you can tell from my blog posts I really don't like keeping track of what I eat. I tried sticking to a schedule of working out in the morning. These things helped, but they didn't work completely. I also need to learn to be flexible. If I fail to wake up one morning for early workouts then I can go in the afternoon or evening. It might help to keep a track of what I eat, but maybe be less detailed about it. Maybe only keeping track of when I ate rather than what I ate is more fitting.

I have to realize that I am not a morning person. It will always be difficult for me to wake up in the early morning. Therefore, I should not expect myself to wake up early to exercise. Today was a failure of the morning. I did not exercise, and missed a Dr. appointment. I stayed in bed to the very last minute that I needed for my interview. The day wasn't over. I still had time to exercise, so I went after class. Maybe exercise after class can become an option. I still would like to try to wake up early each morning to exercise, because it is healthy to have a schedule that prevents me from being in my bed all day.

I have also focused on a night time ritual. I get a cup of chamomile and ginger honey tea (yes it has sugar but it balances the strong ginger) at around 10pm. I also take my medication at 10 pm. This give me about an hour to do things like, write my blog, read the bible, read non-fiction or fiction. And another hour to focus on getting to bed, so I fall asleep at 12 (not go to bed at 12). It usually takes a little time to transition from being in bed to falling asleep.

I want to come back to writing in my blog more. My first semester of grad school is coming to an end. I haven't been writing in here because I have been occupied with my grad school work, and plus I didn't feel like it. I really just didn't want to face my goals.
I have bipolar disorder and my moods wax and wane from goal directed motivation to lazy lack of interest. It is a struggle to find a balance and that is my goal for this blog. I am Determined-2b-Determined to "Find the Excitement in the Mundane "goals that will keep me healthy.

Running Emotions

Day 5
So I was just chillin out reading Les Mis. and had a bite to eat, which I need to give myself credit for. My dad went to Arbys which I'm not crazy about in the first place, but besides getting the sandwich he got curly fries, onion rings, a chocolate and cheery turnover, and a jamocha shake. I would normally be really excited that he got all of those, because I love accessory foods. But since I am watching what I eat I was not happy about it. I restrained myself and only had one onion ring and one fry (a very long curly fry though) and sat back down with my book and ate the sandwich. It was a beef-n-cheddar with white cheese instead. It was good, for an Arby's, but I could taste the unhealthiness of it -very salty. Since I wasn't very hungry and ate not long before, I just ate half and thought I might eat the rest when I get hunger later. Choosing to not eat when I am not really hungry is something I don't usually do, so I am proud of my self for only eating half of the sandwich. I normally eat a full meal when I am not particularly hungry. I should note, however, that you shouldn't wait till you are hungry to eat. I have been told by a nutritionist to eat about every 4 hours to keep your metabolism going. The fact that my tastes buds noticed the unhealthy taste of the sandwich is significant. Maybe it is because I am eating more fruits and vegetables. I just think it is really cool that I am beginning to not enjoy the taste and feeling that fast food gives me.

As I was reading I remembered to check my email. When I did, I saw an email from University of Louisville. It said I was not accepted to the graduate school. :-( It really made me upset. This was the fourth rejection letter I have gotten out of five schools; I was loosing hope. I had to decided how I was going to react to this news. I could decide to go back to reading and just ignore my feelings of frustration and disappointment. I went inside and picked up my Cavalier King Charles dog, Addie, holding her, feeling her in my arms was comforting. She is like a baby. As I was holding her I thought about how to react to the rejection. I choose not to tell my parents yet, that would involve their emotions about it and talking about it - I just didn't want to deal with that yet. I recognized that I was angry and thought that avoiding it by going back to reading was not a good choice. I thought running would be a good outlet, and I could get some exercise.

I got my iPod and running shoes and was off. I decided to do a Fartlek, it is where you run and walk/jog in intervals. I was listening to the music as I ran. The first song couldn't have been better; it was a Mason Clover upbeat song. I started in a full sprint which was empowering and a bit awkward as I was exposed to the whole neighborhood, bolting past a woman walking a dog and a gardener. I knew it didn't matter, I was just amazed at the speed I was going. I could not recall every going that fast. My legs were pumping from the decline, I didn't slow down till I got to the flat surface. I was aware of my body as I was propelled forward down the hills and was aware of my body when I slowed down and I could feel myself getting winded. Being aware of my body like that was surreal. I decided to switch to walking at the next post.

I prepared for the next downhill and decided that I would base my pace on the terrain throughout the run. I would walk or barely jog on uphills and jog or run on flat surfaces and go full out on the downhills. As I went down the next hill I let it take over and force my legs to go faster than ever. Emotion came over me as adrenaline set in. I as recognizing my emotion, listening to it and it wanted to cry - right there in the street as a bus was driving by. I was still running and I allowed myself to cry. I don't even know if there were tears, it was one of those painful cries that you can see in the mouth and the face gets all scrunched up. As I got to the bottom of the hill still in full speed I decided to take the turn, knowing that it would take me into the next neighborhood, which was notoriously hilly. So I started up the hill in a slow jog - the kind where you are at the pace of walking but just picking up your feet more and swing your arms. It was a tough hill. I was listening to the music - the words were speaking to me. I can't remember what they said, but it kept me moving even though it was a slower song. It came to me again - the crying. I listening to my emotions and let it come out. Letting myself cry is a big deal, I usually brush things off and don't let myself get emotional. I looked around and thought for a moment what I looked like - barely jogging up this hill crying in plain sight in witness to all the cutesy suburban houses; I said to myself, "I don't care, I need this. I am glad i am crying." I took a walking break at the top of the hill. I was approaching a flat stretch, so I thought I better pick up the pace before, another hills comes. I went off running to the beat of the music. When I got tired, still on a flat surface, I switch to walking at the next post. I kind of stopped running before I got to the post; I caught myself and ran the rest of the way.

I went into a walk and reflected on the pretty flowers and how the hills are metaphoric. In the life there are ups and downs and sometimes on an up you need to press on in a jog, putting forth the same effort that would be pretty fast on a flat surface, but on a hill is a crawl. Other times we need to walk during the uphill times, so we have time to experience and learn and grow. Often times hills are thought of metaphorically as a positive time, but gosh darn it when you are exercising it sure isn't. It takes a lot of energy to go up hill, but maybe that is how life is; it takes a lot of effort to get to the top - to that goal place. The downhill times I let go and let the hill take me over causing me to run really fast. It is scary and feels like I don't have to put out any effort; I just have to pick my feet up so I don't trip and fall. Sometimes you might feel like you need to put the breaks on and try and make your legs go slower, because your scared, but that can actually be more damaging to your body due to the fierce impact. So are downhill times good in life? They are certainly a relief in running. It doesn't feel like you are putting forth much effort, but you are going fast - which is good. I guess when downhill is thought of negatively it is because it is leading to a low place.

After thinking about this I approached the final hill. I realized I was not ready for it, and the music was not fast enough. This was a biggie; I prepared myself. The song came on and I let go and was off down the hill. All I was doing was trying to pick my legs up fast enough and keep them from buckling. There was a moment when I was going so fast I subconsciously made one of my legs brake (by straightening it out), because I was a little afraid. I reassured myself, "You can't do that," and continued picking my feet up. I was huffing and puffing like a heavy weight lifter. I swear it was so loud it seemed like people could hear from inside their homes. About halfway down the hill my headphones came out. I was going way too fast to care; there was no stopping me. It made the scene feel all that more dramatic; almost like when Forest Gump ran for the first time and his leg braces come off. I reached the bottom of the hill at the stop sign. I was finished! I was so winded; all I could do was walk it off. I had to bring my heart rate down. The mailman happened to be right at the bottom of the hill when I finished. who knows what he was thinking. I was afraid he was going to stop and talk to me (he is a friendly man), but thankfully he didn't. I put my earphones back in and walked on. I was so exhausted. I needed to cool down so much that I walked past my house to the end of the street. I was so exhausted I was barely walking, dragging my feet, back slumped, huffing and puffing. I felt and probably looked like a zombie. When I came to the hill in my driveway I was probably taking one step every 30 seconds. I was in autopilot; I had checkout. It took all my energy just to pick my feet up. I opened the gate to the back porch and my mom saw me and laughed and imitated my zombie like appearance. I was a little irritated at that so I playfully threw the newspaper at her.

As I was standing there I told my mom the bad news. She gave me a hug and said she was sorry. I appreciated that, even though I'm not very affectionate. She continued to ask me "why do you think you got turned down," and "what are you going to do now". I really didn't want to hear that -it was frustrating me. I didn't want to think about that yet - I actually already had thought of it, but didn't want to explain myself to my mom. I told her I really didn't want her to talk that way right now. She listened to me and let me just sit there in silence, which I was happy with being so exhausted. I understand that she can't help wondering why her wonderful daughter would get rejected, but I just didn't want to hear it. I just wanted comfort, not explanation. Usually I don't really acknowledge the need for comfort and try to be tough, but later I called some friends to make me feel better.

I am really proud of how I handled the news of being rejected. I am proud of myself for facing my emotions instead of bottling them up, and I am really happy that I used my frustration to fuel an extreme run. I would not have had the motivation to run like that without the frustration I had.
